Career stories

Steve Varga

After being born and raised in Los Angeles by Hungarian parents, I decided to try my luck for my university years in Budapest. After graduating from Corvinus University with a Master's in International Economics and the Central European University with a Masters in International Relations, Budapest (completely baffling to some) still remained my city of choice. With some background in sales, but still no firm idea as to the direction I wanted to take my career, in 2005 I found my first real job opportunity at Genpact.

Two days after I joined as a regional leader for GE Healthcare's telemarketing operations, and with barely a clue of what I was in store for, I was already sent off to London to meet the customer. For the following two years, I managed a team of 2 and played a pivotal role for GE Healthcare's European telemarketing operations. I organized campaigns, prepared sales scripts and marketing pitches, conducted high level marketing research and analysis, and I was effectively in charge of a decent chunk of revenue. On the flip side, I went through many useful Genpact trainings and even completed a "quality" project in IT development.

I joined Genpact 4 years ago, even before I had formally completed my university studies. During my time here, there have always been opportunities for developing my skills in many areas: leadership training, language courses, quality methods (Six Sigma, Lean), MBA courses, just to mention a few areas here.

The aforementioned trainings, the support of my direct managers, the cooperation of my colleagues and a portion of persistence prepared my way to become the operations manager of a dynamically growing excellent team of 37. About half a year later I was trusted to be able to take on another GEHC Team as well, hence my span increased to 54. New challenges are waiting here such as: regular contact with our 10-15 customers, to whom the team does administrative work or order management in multiple languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Hungarian covering countries from Scandinavia to the Middle East. My other responsibilities are: maintaining the positive customer perception; replying and actioning on customer escalations; in case new processes are coming, the preparation of contracts, negotiation on pricing, finalization of resource calculations; keeping the team on target, giving regular feedback, evaluation and increasing the productivity; selecting new-hires and one of the most important: facilitating a good team-spirit, trust and openness towards my team-mates, colleagues.

Just like many of my fellow peers I had an amazing graduation story at the College of Finance and Accountancy in the Budapest Business School. After each semester I was glad to survive all the challenges and was sure that no bigger challenges in life may arise. How naive I was.

Just before graduation I accepted a job offer at Diageo, world leading company in alcoholic beverages…well, even I didn’t know about it that time. However, I quickly found myself in the heart of business life when taking on an assignment in Scotland just after 4 months spent at the Budapest office. This step ultimately has given directions to my future career and frankly I managed to learn more in 6 months than I ever expected.
